Why I’m running for Congress
My name is Naomi Andrews and I am running for Congress in New Hampshire's First Congressional District. Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter is retiring, but I believe the people of NH still want someone in Congress who “gets it.” I grew up in New Hampshire, I am from the middle class, I knows what it's like, and I will work every day for the people of the First District and their families. I have worked for Carol for more than a decade, and I share her love for people and her determination to fight for the rest of us. As her chief of staff, I worked each and every day on all of the national and state issues and the challenges that impact our lives in NH—protecting healthcare, supporting small businesses, protecting the environment, honoring promises to our troops and veterans, addressing the opioid crisis—and I can hit the ground running on day one to serve you.
Carol has endorsed me in this primary election. She has cited my crucial role in delivering results for Granite Staters. I was Chief of Staff when a writer at the Huffington Post referred to our office as one of the “hardest-working.” As public servants, that made all of us at the office proud, and I am committed to keeping that tradition of hard work and service.
I also know something about the fight to keep the American dream alive for the present generation and for the next. I grew up in Epping, graduated from the public school system, and then I attended college, the first in my family to ever do so.
My parents instilled in me a strong work ethic. My mom worked in restaurants, and she also played the role of ‘super mom.’ My dad works full-time at a nursing home as well as owning his own small cleaning business for decades. I worked alongside my dad washing windows and I learned from both my parents the value of hard work and the value of a dollar.
Through hard work and sacrifice, my brother, sister, and I were able to get through college, and although we still have significant school loans, we're better off than our parents were. That's the American dream—work hard, play by the rules, and your kids/the next generation will have more opportunity. But it's getting much harder.
Like my family, most Americans live on tight budgets, trying to stretch their paychecks, and create a better future. They need someone who stands up for them, and if you give me the great honor of serving you in Congress, I will do that every day. And I won't be beholden to special interests because I refuse to accept corporate PAC or DC lobbyist money. Carol has been practicing campaign finance reform since 2006, and I have supported that as her campaign manager, long before the Citizens United decision.
I know every inch of this district through my work in the congressional office, but I also know this beautiful state because of my love for the outdoors. My father, brother, and I have hiked all 48 of New Hampshire’s four thousand foot mountains. I’ve also skied, biked, camped, and kayaked throughout New Hampshire! And most days, my dogs and I can be found running somewhere beautiful by sunrise. I take full advantage of our beautiful state.
I have the experience, enthusiasm, and commitment to serve the people of this district that I love so much! I will never forget that public office is a public trust. If you do give me the privilege of representing you, you have my pledge that I will work every day to make life better for the rest of us! I humbly ask for your vote on Primary Day, September 11.
